ACLU to aid terrorism defendants By CAROL ROSENBERG McClatchy Newspapers

The American Civil Liberties Union, which for years has scorned Pentagon military commissions as "kangaroo courts," announced Friday that it will try to provide top civilian attorneys for defendants facing trial at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, including the alleged mastermind of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Former Attorney General Janet Reno is among top lawyers who've endorsed the $8.5 million effort, which will help coordinate and defray the expenses of civilian defense attorneys working on the terrorism cases. The Pentagon won't reimburse volunteer civilian attorneys for their expenses in relation to the military commissions.

ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said a major thrust of the effort will be to defend Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who military officials say has confessed to masterminding the 9-11 attacks and several other terrorist acts.

The ACLU chose to focus on Mohammed's defense, Romero said, because he appears to be "the government's top priority in the prosecution. And whether or not they are able to convict Khalid Sheik Mohammed under these rules may well determine the fate of the almost 300 other men who are detained at Guantanamo."

Mohammed was held in secret CIA custody until September 2006, and the CIA has admitted waterboarding him, which is considered torture by many rights advocates. His case "is likely to raise the most significant issues of torture, hearsay evidence and access to counsel," Romero said.

Because the prisoners have been cast by the White House as the most reviled enemies of America, the ACLU and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers issued endorsements of the effort from high-profile lawyers.

"This is the time to demonstrate to the world that the United States need not abandon its principles even as it seeks to ensure the safety of its citizens," Reno said.

Now don't that just set you off? Well, it should. Khalid Sheik Mohammed, found to be the mastermind behind 911 will be defended, no doubt with your tax dollars and probably get off because he was waterboarded.

SPEAKING OF POLITICIANS..........

It appears that folks are worried about Barack Obama and his "muslim" heritage. Is he a Muslim? Or is he a Christian? Should he be president? It's pretty tough to really know for sure.

The thought of a pro-jihadist as president is very bad. He would probably be dealt with quickly and severly upon that discovery.

I don't think having one of "theirs" as president would be as beneficial to them as the "now-in-effect-poor-border-control measures" that we have in place now. ( Well,..... the enforcement thereof would be helpful ).

If they keep coming in here and being allowed to set up their "disguise mosques" , then how long before they touch off some suitcase nukes in 10 or 20 major cities at once? Last years ice storm would be a piece of cake compared to dealing with that.

On the other hand.............if Obama would truly make a great president, it would be a shame to by-pass him just because he knows the Koran. It would be handy to know the Koran right about now. One might be able to truly find out if the Koran DOES want all infidels slaughtered and that the "non-terrorist" muslims we have in our hospitals working on people are actually all for it ?!?
